On January 10, within the framework of the program "To have a future", Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Thai Ha Book Joint Stock Company - gave a speech on reading culture and the future. of the Vietnamese publishing industry.
In his speech, Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung shared his cherished things to develop Vietnam's publishing industry and build a reading culture. Previously, Mr. Hung shared that Vietnam did not have a reading culture. In many other countries, people take books with them wherever they go. Traveling, going out, they read at any time. Drinking coffee, waiting for the bus, arriving before the appointment time, they all take advantage of reading books... As for Vietnamese people, hardly anyone takes advantage of such reading time.
According to him, a country that wants to develop strongly, with a future, needs a developed publishing industry and building a reading culture in the community.
Dr. Hung wondered: “Is Vietnamese publishing an industry? If Vietnam has a publishing industry, it has a future. As long as the publishing and library industry has not developed, the country will still be in "black mud". To have a great, modern city can take us 1 year, 10 years. But to have a civilized country and intellectual people, it is not 1 year, 10 years, but 100 years.
Dr. Nguyen Manh Hung pointed out that, in recent years, although remarkable results have been achieved, there are still many limitations in the general level of the publishing world in Vietnam.
He made a number of recommendations to create an ecosystem for Vietnamese publishing: Firstly, to establish a national committee on reading culture. Second, it is necessary to legislate reading promotion activities at schools and localities. Third, there must be a reading promotion fund, calling for funding for book awards to encourage. Fourth, there must be a translation law and a translation fund. The fifth is the equitization of a number of publishers…
Mr. Hung emphasized: “In order to have a future, we must change the mechanism. To have a future, you have to change the way you do things. Each of us must always renew ourselves. Many say they renew every year, so throw it away. Renewed monthly, also poured into the sea. Daily innovation doesn't work either. Must renew every second.
This second, the next second, we have to become a different person, so we can change. But procrastinating, waiting after one night can't change forever, still the same old person. I change myself every second. So if you miss this second, there will be another second. If you keep procrastinating day by day, it will be too late a year later.”
